Ticket and VIP scams in Dubai: 9 schemes and how to protect yourself

Fake Formula 1 and concert tickets, prepaid “yachts”, fake concierges on Instagram and Telegram, transfers to personal cards. We break down the 9 most common scam schemes in Dubai and the UAE, the warning signs and what to do if you have already paid.

The more popular the event, the more scammers gather around it. Before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, big concerts at Etihad Arena, UFC nights and New Year’s Eve in Dubai, dozens of “sellers” with tickets, yachts and VIP packages appear on social media. Below are the schemes we see most often, and the simple rules that protect your money.

THE 9 MOST COMMON SCHEMES

1. Fake or screenshot tickets. You receive a PDF or a screenshot of a QR code — the same ticket has been sold to several people, and only the first one gets in.

2. “Last seats at a low price”. Tickets for a sold-out event below face value are the clearest warning sign. Genuine seats after a sell-out almost always cost more.

3. Fake concierges and “agents” on Instagram and Telegram. A beautiful page, other people’s photos of yachts and Paddock Club, reviews from people who do not exist — and no legal entity or office.

4. Cloned websites. A copy of a well-known site on a look-alike address with one letter or the domain changed. Your payment goes to the scammers.

5. A deposit for a yacht or villa to a personal card. “The booking expires in an hour, send the deposit” — and after the transfer the owner disappears.

6. “Access through a friend”. A promise to get you into the paddock, backstage or a private party without a ticket or a contract.

7. Crypto-only payment to a private wallet, or a transfer through third parties — with no invoice and no receiving company.

8. Fake hospitality packages. You are promised “Paddock Club” or a “VIP box”, and on the day there are ordinary seats or nothing at all.

9. Resold named tickets. The ticket is issued in someone else’s name and is refused at the gate.

WARNING SIGNS

A price well below the market. Time pressure: “pay within the hour”. No legal entity, licence or office address. A request to pay a personal card, through a friend or in crypto only. No written offer and no invoice. The seller cannot show the supplier’s confirmation.

HOW TO CHECK A SELLER

Ask for the company name and its UAE trade licence number, and check them. Insist on a written offer and an official company invoice. Pay only into the company’s corporate account or by card. Ask for the supplier’s confirmation — organiser, hotel or yacht company — together with the ticket. Tickets for major events are transferred through the organiser’s official app or system.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID

Call your bank immediately and ask to dispute or stop the payment. Keep all messages, numbers, links and receipts. Report it to the police — in Dubai you can do this through the Dubai Police eCrime platform. Warn the platform where you found the seller.
