The biggest spectacle on earth, and the hardest to see properly. For two nights the twelve Special Group samba schools parade through the Sambadrome — 3,000 dancers a school, 70-metre floats, an hour and twenty minutes each, from nine in the evening until the sun comes up over the Avenida. Everything else in Rio that week — the street blocos, the balls, Copacabana at dawn — is the setting; the Sambadrome is the event.

The difference between watching and being there is the seat. Obsidians places you in the private boxes on the Avenida, at the Copacabana Palace's Magic Ball, and, if you want it, in the parade itself.

The seats

Camarote (private box) — the first tier above the Avenida, open bar, dinner, private lounge and the best view of the parade; sold by night
Frisa (front-row box) — the open boxes at track level, six seats, the floats passing an arm's length away
Sector 9 — Tourist Sector — numbered seats on the finishing straight, where the schools give everything
Champions Parade — Saturday 13 February, the six winning schools parade again; the same seats at a gentler pace

    • The parade runs left to right on the plan: schools enter at Sector 1 and finish at the Apotheosis Square between Sectors 12 and 13. Odd sectors (3, 5, 7, 9, 11) are on one side of the Avenida, even sectors (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) opposite. Sectors 7 to 11 see the schools at full energy; Sector 9 is the numbered "tourist" sector, the most comfortable of the open stands.
    • Grandstands — Sectors 2 to 11, 12 and 13
    • Open terraced stands along the whole Avenida. Numbered seats in Sector 9, unallocated in the others. The atmosphere of the parade at its loudest; the best value on the plan.
    • Front Box (Frisa) — in front of every sector
    • Open boxes at track level, six seats each, directly on the Avenida. The floats and the dancers pass within reach — the closest anyone gets to the parade without being in it. Sold as a full box.
    • Camarote Mar — Sector 6
    • Private hospitality box on the even side, opposite the concentration of the schools' energy in Sectors 7 to 9. Open bar, buffet dinner, air-conditioned lounge, private restrooms and a terrace over the Avenida. Sold per person, per night.
    • Camarote VerdeRosa — Sector 7
    • Hospitality box on the odd side, in the section where the schools reach the halfway mark and the judges' stands. Open bar and dinner, lounge and terrace; smaller and more intimate than Mar.
    • Camarote Folia Tropical — Sector 8
    • The best-placed box on the plan: the even side just before the finishing straight, where every school gives its final push. Premium open bar, gourmet dinner, live music between schools, private terrace. The box to choose when only the best will do.
    • Nights-Sunday 7 and Monday 8 February — Special Group parades, six schools a night
    • Saturday 13 February — Champions Parade, the six winners,Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February — Access Group
